Ray Lane, Founder and Chairman of the Board

Ray Lane is General Partner at venture capital firm Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers. Since joining KPCB in 2000, Ray has sponsored several of the firm’s investments aimed at improving enterprise productivity. He sits on the boards of privately held companies Elance, Valdero, Metamatrix, Visible Path and two other ventures, and serves on the board of public company Quest Software. Before joining KPCB, Ray was President and Chief Operating Officer of Oracle Corporation, where he led Oracle’s business expansion beyond its core database technology into enterprise applications and professional services. Sales grew from $1 billion to $10 billion during his tenure. Prior to Oracle, Ray was a senior partner with Booz-Allen & Hamilton, and served on its board of directors and executive management committee. Previously, he worked at Electronic Data Systems Corp. (EDS) and IBM.

Ray received a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and an honorary Ph.D. in Science from West Virginia University, and an honorary Ph.D. from Golden Gate University. Ray serves on the board of trustees of Carnegie Mellon University and as Vice Chairman of Special Olympics International.

Kim Polese

As CEO of SpikeSource, Kim Polese is responsible for guiding the company’s business vision: enabling businesses to harness the power of open source as a flexible, reliable and cost-effective option for business-critical software. Prior to SpikeSource, Kim cofounded Marimba in 1996, and as President and CEO she led the company to profitability and a successful public offering. She then served as Chairman until Marimba’s acquisition by BMC Software in April 2004. Before cofounding Marimba, Kim worked at Sun Microsystems and was the original product manager for Java, leading its launch in March 1995. Prior to Java, Kim worked in Sun’s software division on object-oriented development environments. Previously, she worked at Intellicorp, Inc., helping Fortune 500 firms implement expert systems.

Kim earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biophysics from U.C. Berkeley, and studied Computer Science at the University of Washington, Seattle. Kim serves on the executive council of TechNet, a bipartisan coalition of executives focused on the growth of the technology industry and economy, on the board of the Global Security Institute and on the University of California President’s Board on Science and Innovation. She is a Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for Engineered Innovation.

Dave Power

Dave Power is an independent consultant representing Volition Capital on the board of SpikeSource.  Mr. Power, President of Power Strategy, is a strategic advisor to technology companies.  In his prior role as Partner at Fidelity Ventures he served on the boards of Black Duck Software, EnterpriseDB, Ping Identity, Polyserve (acquired by Hewlett Packard), Red Brick Health, Vibes Media and Ventana.

Dave has held a number of operating roles in technology companies. He was CEO of Novera Software, a pioneer in Web application integration acquired by Mercator Software. Prior to Novera, Dave was Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Development at RSA Security. Dave was also Vice President and General Manager for two software businesses at Sun Microsystems. In addition to his operating roles, Dave served as a venture partner at Charles River Ventures, and was a Vice President at Mercer Management, where he cofounded the firm’s technology industry practices.

Dave earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Engineering from Tufts University and an MBA from Stanford Business School, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar.

James F. Watson

Jim Watson is the Managing General Partner at CMEA Capital and he specializes in software and services companies. He is on the Board of Directors of Apriso, a provider of plant and warehouse automation software; HassoPlattnerVentures, a European fund; iSuppli, a market intelligence service for the electronics supply chain; Jobvite, an internet platform for referral hiring; LiveOps, a provider of on-demand call center solutions; MailExpress, a provider of outsourced mail services for large commercial mailers; Amitive, an on-demand supply chain management software company; Odyssey Logistics, a provider of outsourced logistics management services to the chemical industry; Pixazza, an internet platform company; Schooner Technologies, a systems company for internet data centers of the future; SpikeSource, a fully automated platform for certifying software solutions; TrueDemand, an optimization platform for the retail industry; and Untangle, a network virtualization software company. Jim was also on the board of CMEA portfolio companies PathScale, acquired by QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC), and Teros, acquired by Citrix (NASDAQ: CTXS).


Prior to joining CMEA, Jim was a founder and entrepreneur. He founded Skyway Systems, a high technology services company. He was company President and leader behind the supply chain strategy that twice landed Skyway on the Inc. Magazine list of fastest growing U.S. companies. Inc. Magazine also named Jim as one of the Entrepreneurs of the Year. Skyway, with over 1,300 employees and revenues above $100 million, was subsequently acquired by Union Pacific Corporation (UPN). Prior to Skyway, Mr. Watson was with IBM's large computer systems division.


Jim graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland and served five years as a Navy pilot.
